New Zealand did not issue any coins for 1938. Australia did though including this crown.   The second year of this denomination, just 100,000 minted and the people decided they did not like it, as it was too large. 1 million were minted in 1937, but after this one, it was no longer minted. They tried a 5/- note in 1939 - but due to the war it never came out. This means these coins are very scarce now and worth around 10x their melt value. One of the keys in any Australian collection. 1938 saw the release of the new designs by Kruger Gray and all of the coins except the Halfpenny, which kept the old design a year longer had them.   Here I have a nice penny, shilling and Florin. Missing the others. You will see only 1 coin for 1937 from OZ, but with 1936 we head back into the more historic and worn era of my Australian collection. Edited by Princetane

And good of you to fill in those gaps too Steve! UK Halfcrown   Not rare by any standards, but the mintage of 6.4 million was the lowest of all KGVI Halfcrowns except 1952 of course. This one is almost UNC again.   My florin is very average, a low mintage too - but this coin is hardly rare because its only Fine - VF condition and more realistic for coins of this era. No one else minted a Halfcrown this year (Rhodesia and Sth Africa may have, but I don't have them).   1938 Silver Threepence  1938 Brass Threepence (This side only) And for Steve to go with his 10 kurus   Turkiye - I Kurus |

I will admit, I am sad I am not seeing the usual parade of American Half dollar commems - Americans, where are ye? 1936 is coming.....  More from me for 1937. |
