one of the few last contributions I can make: a 1546 copper token of the guild of the porters, made in Antwerp, with an explicit mention of the date OBV: under 1546 a wheelbarrow legend GHEMAECKT INT IAER VAN (made in the year of) REV: St. Andrew carrying cross; countermarked P legend SANCTVS A NDREAS  |

1545 copper courte (2 mites) of the Duchy of Brabant, with an image of Emperor Charles V. It seems everyone was wearing the same style beard in the 1540s (even St. Andrew on 1c5d's coin)   Edited by tdziemia

I will move us to 1544 with this teston of the Duchy of Lorraine:   This type features some very interesting construction of letters (engraver's shortcuts?): - the H is formed from 2 Is with a "handlebar" connector - the Ns are formed from two Is with a diagonal stroke added (possibly the first one he made looked so bad he just whacked it with something) - the D has an open back Edited by tdziemia

great portrait of Antoine  here is a (holed) 1544 taler from Halberstadt, Germany, picturing Saint Stephen holding a palm tree branch and the stones he is going to be murdered with  I post this piece, together with another Stephen's taler from Nijmegen (same period but not dated), in the thread "when all the Saints" iniated by Tdziemia |

Unlike many other European sovereigns, the portrait was never changed as he aged, and by 1543 when he was painted by Hans Holbein, he looked comletely different from the portrait on his 1544 coin, with the "pageboy" style haircut gone, and instead wearing the long beard which had become fashionable:  His grandson, Charles III became duke as a child in 1545, but his coins showed him ageing across 5 different portraits over the 50+ years of his reign. For 1543, I am on the other (eastern) side of the Holy Roman Empire with this 1 groschen of the Duchy of Liegnitz-Brieg, which had just come under Hapsburg rule in 1526.   Edited by tdziemia
