More 1990 and my first Communist coins from the Eastern Bloc Czechoslovakia 10, and 20 haleru. 1990 this country was now democratic, but the communist designs remained a bit longer with the star on the coins and you see the word "Socialist" in Eastern European languages Some more communist coinage, this time Yugoslavia in its death throes. This was a Novokh dinar, reformed after some mild late 80s inflation (It would only get worse through the 90s civil war and after). Finally back to democracy with these Danish low value 25 and 50 ore. These coins got a redesign in the late 80s with the hearts more prominent on them (Actually an ancient symbol on the Danish coat of arms). It led to holed 1,2, 5 Kroner and the Aluminium bronze 10 and new denomination 20 Kroner. The inflation of the 1970s and 1980s saw globally many new coin denominations spring up with aluminium brass or bronze being used as this metal simulated the gold colour and signified the high face value of these coins, as most were previously banknotes. The 25 Ore here did not last the 90s and was phased out, so now the 50 ore is the lowest face value coin there.

1989 Australia Group These coins were easy to find in circulation in 1989 - the 1c to 10c and the $2 coin in its 2nd year. Some $2 coins had HH on them, which was removed part way through 1989, as it appeared on the elder's chest and some Indigenous Australians saw this as insulting ( I agree). Machinmachinman did very well finding the 50c coin in circulation. It would be as challenging as finding 20c and $1 coins too, as they were set only pieces. NZ had a range of silver coins issued in 1989, all but the 50 cents. The 1c and 2c had been demonitised and there was no $1 or $2 yet, so this was all of it. Also issued was the 1989 year set which included the 4 main coins 5c to 50c and 4 x large dollars for the Commonwealth games, I have all 4 in stunning silver as you can see. World coins coming up later.

1989 was a histotic year for British coins. It was the last year the large-size 5 pence was issued for circulation: The old 5p was the same diameter and weight as the old shillings that had been issued from 1816 to 1966, and which were still legal tender along with the 5p until demonetised on 12/31/1990. The 1989 £1 coin featured the Scottish Thistle design: Two commemorative £2 coins were issued in 1989. Although legal tender, the nickel-brass £2 coins seldom circulated. In those days The Royal Mint wanted to give people a history lesson rather than just mint pretty pictures of children's book characters! The coins commemorated the Bill of Rights, which followed the accession of William and Mary to the throne in 1689, replacing the unpopular Catholic James II. The Bill limited the power of the monarchy and established regular parliaments, free elections, and freedom of speech plus the prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment and the right not to pay taxes levied without the approval of Parliament. The Scottish parliament passed a similar Act called the Claim of Right, so separate 'English' and 'Scottish' coins were issued: France also had two major anniversaries to commemorate in 1989 - the bicentenary of the French Revolution... ... and the centenary of the Eiffel Tower in Paris: On the other hand, the Isle of Man portrayed a then state-of-the-art desktop PC on its 50 pence coin: A different reverse design was used for the 1989 Manx Christmas 50p:

1989 was a good year. I wish I could go back to it, funky music and clothes and I was 13! Tiny 1 Franc from Belgium, this coin was shrunk in the 80s. Some of the last communist coins of Hungary, in late 89 it opened its border to Austria and by 1990, it was essentially democratic. In fact its behaviour inspired the East German freedom movement as they went to Hungary and then to Austria and the West. The 20 Filler and all filler coins disappeared with democracy. Luxembourg 50 Francs, these coins were the same size and type as the Belgian 50 Francs, a denomination that was only "de banknoted" in 1987.
