Some more 1989 coins from me too.   Portugal 20 Escudos to join NumisRobs 100 above. the coins of Portugal at this time were beautiful and harked back to their 15th century naval domination. This one shows the large compass with points designed by Prince Henry the Navigator (Who was half English)  Netherlands 5 Guilders, like the Spanish 500 Pesetas, a high face value coin at the time worth around £1.70.  Czechoslovakia low value coins of 1989, where as the 5G and 500Ptas were worth a fortune, these were worth much less. Many Eastern Block countries used cheap metals like Aluminium and brass for all their coins. As you can see, Cupronickel got supplanted heavily by stainless and plated steel in the mid and late 1980s. Edited by Princetane

Last group for 89   I have a few US proof sets from the 80s, this was the dullest time for them, the commems of the era were super expensive silver and gold pieces and this was the el plaino 1c to 50c. This set has a damaged lid. Still its proof I do collect US coins too. You can look forward to a proof set every year back to 82 from me! Danish coins also got a design upgrade in the late 80s  A very cute 50 ore coin, with emphasis on the heart   The 10 Kroner coin which has been in circulation for a while! This replaced a larger silver coloured coin used from 1979 ( I will show one when we reach that year). The 20 Kroner was also issued with the same design but larger. Even now 20 Kroner is nearly $5 NZ. Edited by Princetane

1988 was a huge year for Australia with its bicentennial. Coins galore were issued!   The year set featured a special 50c and $1 which showed the first fleet on the 50c and the Aboriginal style Kangaroo art on the $1. The $2 was introduced replacing a note. This showed an Aboriginal elder and like 1989, the 1988 had HH on his chest (Horst Hahne - designer). Over 100 million $2 were minted!   Also issued as NCLT was a giant crown sized $5 coin which was issued as a celebration of the new Parliament house in Canberra, some may have circulated and these were sold at face value from Banks around Australia.  The size of it next to the standard $2 and $1 ! Finally issued was a $10 as proof and standard silver coin. These were much more limited and cost more. My one is a Proof!   It also shows the first fleet of the convict ships (I have an ancestor off one of them).  Also issued was a $200 gold coin (Naturally I don't have it  and on my budget, the $10 silver one was a stretch)  . By 1988 all sorts of bubblegum issues had started with Holey dollar remakes and the Aussie gold nugget series in gold bullion coins. Heaps more 88 coming from me. The 80s are my decade! |

1988 British coins were much the same as in 1989, but France had another silver 100F in the Revolurion Bicentennial series:   Ireland issued one of its rare commemoratives to commemorate the Millennium of the City of Dublin:  Albania 10 qindarka:  Paraguay 1 Guarani:  Zambia 20 ngwee:  Spain 1 Peseta:  Austria 5 groschen:  Isle of Man 10 pence aod One Pound:   Edited by NumisRob

Don't wish to be the bearer of bad news, but 2 of those coins are from 1998 (Sth Africa cent and Belgian coin). New Zealand was much more dull than Australia for 1988. It was the last year of the single large dollar commem (1989 had 4 of em)  The coin showed the little yellow penguin (Hoiho) the same bird now appears on our $5 note.  The whole series from 5c to 50c was issued, the last year it would be until 2002. The 1c and 2c were still legal tender, but only sets would have 1988 coins in them. The circulation ones stopped in 1987.  Obverses with the $1 added for size effects.  Some circulating Australian coins of 1988 (Not bling bling set ones). |
