1969 was a year of change for UK coins. The old halfpenny was withdrawn on July 31 and the halfcrown on December 31. Only three coins were issued for circulation: the 5p and 10p, equivalent to 1 and 2 shillings, and the world's first seven-sided coin, the 50p, which was released on October 14: The 50p coin was initially very unpopular, and with Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin on top of the charts with the highly erotic song "Je t'aime Moi non plus", many older people must have wondered what was happening to the country... The last pre-decimal coin issued for circulation in the British Isles was the 1969 Irish sixpence: Bahamas 10 cents: Trinidad & Tobago 1 Dollar: Malaysia 1 Dollar: South Korea 1 Won: Denmark 25 ore: Equatorial Guinea 1 Peseta: And in the year of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing, a 1969-S US Kennedy half-dollar that I found in a roll obtained from a bank in Richmond, Virginia in 2004:

1969 was a big year in New Zealand too. For the second time, a dollar coin was issued to celebrate the bicentenary of Captain Cook. This coin showed him and his map of New Zealand. For circulation coins, only the 2c and 5c and 20c were issued, these being the first issues since 1967. A worn 2c and 5c Here is a Proof set of the time called a Speciman set. The $1 and 50c had the edges inscribed The latter coin was only released in proof and uncirculated sets, yet a few ended up in circulation. Australia introduced a 12 sided 50 cent coin in 1969 to replace the silver coin from 1966. the price of silver rose massively in the late 1960s and many countries as you see replaced silver or base silver coins with base metal ones and some high face value coins were issued in multi sided polygons and gold coloured metals. The set here has 2 of the coins and some of the lower face value ones.

2 more commonwealth countries switched to decimal currency in 1969, Jamaica and Fiji. Jamaica issued a beautiful set of coins raging from 1c to $1. At the time the $1 was a one off collectors piece with the 25c being the top coin, the $1 showed Prime Minister Bustamante. Fiji too issued its first decimal coins in late 1969. The set went from 1c to 20c and again issued a one off $1 coin that was crown sized Like Jamaica, they initially had a 50 cent note which replaced the 5 shilling notes. Inflation rendered them obselete in the mid 1970s, although Fiji never had the inflation Jamaica did!
