1968 in New Zealand was like 1972 in the UK. No coins were issued for circulation after the big recoinage in 1967, but some 75,000 Mint sets were issued for sale. This included 35k plain and 40k Polished sets. Both were base metal, but polished included mirrored surfaces. No $1 coin was issued and only the 1c to 50c. The sets also had an optional plush case as shown. Close up of 20c and 50c Australia issued all the coins 1c to 20c in 1968. No 50c was issued as silver was unaffordable and they had not decided on an alternative, this meant 20c coins had more pressure and some 123 million were issued in 1967/68, much more than the 53 million issued in 1966. Numbers of 1c and 2c however were low at 16 and 19 million each compared to 100+ million of each in 1966. A well worn group with a 20c, 5c and 2c. Also from 1968 is this metal token (27mm) showing a building called "Australia Square" was issued as a memento. This building is still standing today in Sydney

1968 was the year the UK issued irs first decimal coins - the 5 and 10 new pence, of the same size and metal as the existing shilling and florin. These were the only 1968-dated coins issued for circulation. The Royal Mint continued to make 1967-dated halfpennies, pennies, threepences, sixpences and halfcrowns as required for circulation: the Government ordered them to 'freeze' the date to discourage hoarding by collectors of the last pre-decimal coins! One of my very earliest numismatic memories is of accompanying my parents on their usual shopping trip one Saturday in March 1968 and pestering shopkeepers by asking if they had any of the new coins! I managed to get a couple of 5p's, but no 10p: the shop assistant at the wine merchant's showed me one he'd received, but he was saving it for his own collection! Apart from Great Britain, the islands of Guernsey and Jersey also issued their own 5p and 10p coins in 1968, although neither had ever issued shillings or florins previously! If you wanted a penny, threepence or sixpence dated 1968, you had to cross the sea to the Republic of Ireland: Meanwhile across the Channel, France entered a state of near-Civil War with the student riots and strikes of May 1968. This may have been the beginning of the end of the silver 5-Franc piece, which would be struck for the last time the next year: Uganda 10 cents: Singapore 10 cents and 1 Dollar: Iraq 10 fils: Vietnam 20 Dong:
