1967 was the last date on British pre-decimal coins minted for circulation, and was a huge mintage year for most denominations, apart from the shilling, which was not minted at all! Close-ups of the halfpenny, penny and sixpence: France silver 10 Francs: Kenya 10 cents: New Caledonia 10 francs: Congo 10 sengi:

New Zealand switched to decimal currency in 1967 and there was a massive issue of nearly 265 million coins (195 million were 1c and 2c). Unlike with the UK dropping 5p and 10p coins earlier on with the 50p, nothing was released here until the actual day July 10 and most people barely even knew what designs the coins had before then! Despite that, it was easily achieved and the switchover was quick and painless. A basic set of the 6 circulation coins. The 50 cent had 7 milled segments on the edge to identify it from the 20 cents only marginally smaller. The Half Crown was demonitised in 1965, so it was not a factor here. Also issued was the commemorative large dollar in very high quantities (500,000 of 300,000 in sets and 200,000 loose) The coin was not meant for circulation but was legal tender. The sets were very common and still are now, most people had one or more squirreled away and even I pay face for them basically. here is a group of oddments from them I sold.

Australia had done the switchover a year earlier, so it was just another year of issuing coins for them and suprisingly all but the 50 cents was. Already by 1967 the price of silver ensured a new issue of silver ones was not feasible and a new design and coin were needed. By this stage most of the 1966 50 cent coins had been hoarded for their silver value. As 36 million were minted, even today they are not rare and are silver value coins only unless MS69 or better. A 1c, 5c and 20c of 1967. However a $5 note was issued for the first time in 1967. Samoa also adopted its own currency in 1967, adopting a decimal dollar known as a Tala and this is a set of their coins. A mint set with the 6 coins from 1 sene to 50 sene and a commemorative 1 Tala coin (Dollar/Crown size). The 50 sene was issued in low numbers as it had quite a bit of value there. Some loose proof coins of 1967. Samoan coins had the value surrounded by the Southern Cross on the 1 sene to 5 sene and the value around the coat of arms for the 10 (Sefulu sene) to 1 tala (Tasi le tala). Samoa used Fijian and New Zealand coins before 1967.

Tonga also adopted a decimal currency in 1967 with a dollar unit known as a Pa'anga made up of 100 seniti (Easily confused with Samoa). Previously they had used Fijian coins (The pound). The second series shown here showed the king Taufa' ahau Tupou IV, however a circulation series from 1 seniti to 50 seniti showed the recently deceased Salote Tupou III (Died Dec 1965). The coins above were special ones from 20 seniti to 2 Pa'anga, the latter was 45mm in size and weighed 42 grams!! An earlier gold coinage of the Koula came out in 1962 and the Platinum coinage Hau in 1968. Both are expensive and scarce.
