Kenya and Tanzania issued their first coins as independent countries rather than part of East African colonial coins.   Kenya used English language and showed a portrait of Jomo Kenyatta for their coins. These are the brass 5 and 10 cents, planchets based on South African ½ and 1 cent. Also issued were cupronickel 25c, 50c and 1 shilling coins with 2 shillings as well. Tanzania went for the full on African route and broke free of British colonialism with a bang. Featuring the very African looking Julius Nyerere with flowers and Swahili on their coins. Nyerere would flirt with Communism and his years of mismanagement ensured Tanzania has remained a basket case, whilst Kenya is one of Africa's most successful and stable countries.   These are 5 cents - Tano, 20 cents Ishrini , 50 cents Hamsini and Shilingi Mia Moja. The last coin shows the torch of Freedom and the others have African animals. Canadian Dollar - Silver   Bahamas 50 cents and $1 silver  Ireland 1966 Complete set from Half Crown to Farthing   Ireland 10 shilling silver coin - Easter Uprising, Padraig Pearse - National Hero - a coin that appeals directly to my roots and heart. Promise that's the end of 66 now! |

1965 - and the death of the great statesman Sir Winston Churchill is marked by a cupro-nickel crown in the UK:  Apart from the crown, all circulating denominations from the halfpenny to the halfcrown were struck for circulation:  The 1965 Scottish shilling is the scarcest British coin of 1965, with a mintage of only 2 million. However, coin collecting was becoming popular in the mid-1960s, and, rather like the 1950D nickel in the USA, so many 1965-S shillings were saved in Uncirculated condition at the time of issue that they've never become particularly valuable:  1965 was the last date on 'British Caribbean Territories - Eastern Group' coins. The various islands making up the group, however, continued to use these coins until the new East Caribbean Currency Authority coinage was released in 1981. The old 10c and 25c remain legal tender today. 1965 was the end of the Predecimal era in New Zealand and Numisrob has shown one of the three grades of set issued late in 1966. His one was the Pink or standard one (The cheapest and most common). Here are the green (Selected) and Blue (Polished) grades.  Close up of the "Polished coins"   A loose set. The 1d and halfcrown were only issued in sets and none were released for circulation, but so many of the sets were broken up, neither coin is rare and you can buy them for $5 or so each. The sets despite the grading are cheap and plentiful. Many people brought them in 1966 with the pink at 10/-, green at £1 and blue at £2 per set. As many of these people died, the coins ended up on the market and there is a glut of them now. When released in September 1966, the blue sets sold out before delivery (Pre orders were taken) and the pink and green were limited to 1 each per customer at Post Offices. Australia did not issue coins in 1965 as they were minting kabillions of coins for the 1966 Decimal currency issue. The Rolling Stones played Invercargill in early 1965 and referred to it as the hole on the bottom of the world. |
