Caught this while hunting cracks and chips. I can only see it under the microscope. Looks like a perfect little circle next to the date. Most likely just PMD but looks interesting.

Can you tell if that mark is raised?

As far as I can tell, it appears raised. It's size makes it difficult.

If level with the field, it maybe a stain.
If incuse on field it would be damage
If raised on the die, then it would be an alteration on the die.

If this were a die issue, then we would expect to see more examples from that that die. But if this is the only one, it maybe just a damaged coin?

I agree. However, it was so small, it would have been easy to overlook. Stains rarely leave a perfect circle. If it was added after the mint then I can't image what could have been used to make it. It's less than halve the size of the date numbers.

I've seen something like this on a cent once and thought it was lathe lines, but it was incuse on the coin:

But Mike Diamond pointed out that they were incuse lines. On a lathe line, they are raised, not incuse.

Hewart, any chance you can get a close-up of the circle?

Coop, on your incuse mystery, it looks like a spiral. I wonder if it could have been struck through a small spiral spring since it's incuse?

OK... This is an optical illusion. Here are a couple more pics. I can't really see it at close magnification. What I got is what looks like PMD. When you back out it appears as a circle. But it disapears up close. I made some graphic adjustments and I can see what looks like a tiny but of damage. Other than that, I have no idea.

Thanks for those extra images.
PMD makes sense since it's incuse.

Could be a stain. On the bow tie, it looks like over polishing on that area of the last image. But on the other two images, there is nothing seen. Thus I feel it is just a coloring of the surface on the coin.
