What I notice on this coin is the lettering Liberty....the L I B E are deep struck. The coin seems a bit off centre. The JP at base of neck just above 9 is almost obscure and the D mark is also of a lower deepth print than the rest of the coin. One the reverse the last A in America is not defined. Is this considered an error.
Thanks for the advice

Nothing there that would be considered an error.
The mint mark was hand punched into the die
so the depth could vary from the rest of the die.

I will correct you on some and give the explanations.

Is not JP is JF from John Flanagan the designer of those quarters. Him was an medalist. and the place strike it is in right place.
The low relief is correct on your statement. After 1965 when the lower the relief first time to accommodate the clad strikes, the 1977 was the third time they lower the relief but re- engraved some details. So the lower design is correct by rapport with others varieties. In fact was the lower design ever.

Hope this will make you understand more about strikes and designs.

Hi Silviosi
Many many thanks for your detailed explanation. I started to buy the odd bag of coins two months ago and find there is just so much to read and look at again and again. I am not a fervent coin collector at the moment but it sure intrigues me more by the day. I am retired and I think I have found something that interests me and that I can spend some money on....
Thanks again
