around the rim of my 1984 D dime would the damage be called a broad strike or what is it? plus the lettering is thicker than the other side did what ever caused the damage to the rim cause it to the lettering and why did it affect the lettering more than the olive and oak branch

@pris, here is the definition of broad strike in our glossary:

Quote:
Broadstrike
Coin struck without a collar, thus when the coin is struck the metal is allowed to expand and increase in diameter. May be centered or uncentered, but must not have any missing lettering or design detail.

Since you have a rim on your coin, I don't think that is it. What is the diameter of this dime?

Certainly not a Broadstrike.
The damage to the letters may have been caused
by a worn die but a spender in any case.

Many, many dimes have a similar appearance--die deterioration is the culprit.

Hard to say when you didn't show a picture of that area.
Another reason to always show a complete photo of both sides.
