 to the CCF That is a legitimate die crack, appears to go rim to rim as noted above. Nice find. Your post needs to be moved to the US Modern Variety/Error forum (the 1940 Jefferson nickel is not a US Classic coin). I'll ask the mod dudes to help out.

Indeed a very legitimate rim-to-rim die crack; I actually have a similar 40-S like yours with a crack like that, also in high grade.

BTW- To add a little more to the descriptions provided by others, this is a bisecting Rim to Rim die crack. Harder to find and therefore more special.
(A "precud" is also a rim to rim die crack but is a little easier to find.)
