Looking for some opinions and thoughts on this. I found this coin some time ago during some coin roll hunting before I had a scope or really knew about errors/varieties etc.

Going through my collection I took a closer look with my scope and phone tonight to find what I think appears to be a die crack through the reverse from top to bottom all the way through Monticello.

My concerns are, am I correct its a die crack? Furthermore, I don't know why but I am questioning the legitimacy of the coin. Something seems off to me but I could be paranoid. Please let me know what you think if you'd be so kind.

That is a legitimate die crack, appears to go rim to rim as noted above. Nice find.

Your post needs to be moved to the US Modern Variety/Error forum (the 1940 Jefferson nickel is not a US Classic coin). I'll ask the mod dudes to help out.

Indeed a very legitimate rim-to-rim die crack; I actually have a similar 40-S like yours with a crack like that, also in high grade.
Rest in Peace

Nice find. Congratulations.

BTW-
To add a little more to the descriptions provided by others, this is a bisecting Rim to Rim die crack.
Harder to find and therefore more special.

(A "precud" is also a rim to rim die crack but is a little easier to find.)
