I would definitely trust NGC to detect a counterfeit. However in the case of a raised mintmark, if done expertly, there will be nothing to detect. For all intents and purposes it has become a genuine coin.

This is why I raised the point of looking for metal flow from the MM. The elongation of the lower serif seen on the OP's example is due to Die Deterioration. At a magnified level there will be metal flow lines leading from the MM to the fields. This would be next to impossible to recreate using the raised MM method, as the metal is simply pressed upward to form a MM. A struck counterfeit and cast could show these metal flow lines (cast only showing them the originally cast coin exhibited them). Cast being the easier to detect. Just my opinion.

I was split 50/50 on this being authentic. Now that I've gotten the pics from NGC, it's more like 1/99. I wonder how the dark patch on the braid showed up and why the coin is so dark. It didn't look like that before I sent it.

It's the same coin, I checked the marks from your photos and NGC's. Interesting how the black spots showed up though. There is no doubt the coin is genuine.

I wouldn't be concerned about the overall color. Your pics look a little over exposed and NGC likely bumped up the contrast and played with the white balance and shadows as well. The spots though are a bit concerning. No sign of them in your pics. Maybe moisture or a foreign substance was trapped in the flip? Pretty quick to show up though. I'd keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get worse.

Overall nice looking example! Not as early die state as I thought with your pics,
but still better than average for sure. XF45, just shy of AU

So what did they grade it? I tried to look up the number and entered all possible grades but it isn't showing up.

NGC takes the pictures before grading. Hopefully I will know by the end of the week.

Thanks for the update. I also find those spots worrisome; as Ty2020b mentioned, I don't really see any indication of them in your original pic, even when I loaded it into a photo editor, enlarged and adjusted the exposure to better match NGC's pics.

From the NGC pictures I am going to call it AU-50 but pictures don't often reflect luster accurately. Slight wear at the tail but you can still see the split tail. That is a great coin Jerry! The horn has just the slightest amount of incompleteness at the very tip. Perhaps you can have NGC conserve those verdigris spots before they slab it. It sure would be worth the extra bucks to take care of that on a scarce coin in high grade. Congrats!

That looks like verdigris on the braid, but puzzling how it could have developed in just a month.

I will have to re-submit for conservation if I feel it is needed. Thanks for all of your input. I'm very happy with the grade.
