Hello, I was just curious as to how important it is to update my copy of the " Red Book" every year? The 2010 version is coming out in a few weeks but I just bought the 2009 version in September of '08. Do I really need to update right away? Thanks, Rich Rich M. - Collector since 2008

In my opinion, no.
The prices are already obsolete by the time it is released; more current pricing and mintage figures are available online or from magazines.
The other material does not seem change much from year to year. I typically buy a new one every four or five years which, in my opinion, is how long it takes for the information to have changed enough. My latest is a 2007 edition.

You absolutely must by one every year. Not buying one each year would mean Whitman Publishing would loose out on sales and have to lay off personal. Then too the publishers would not be eligable for those million dollar bonuses. Basically as noted by others. If you don't collect them, then one about every 3 to 5 years is sufficient. The prices in those books are not realistic for about that time anyway. So if your had a 2006 or 7 edition, the prices would finally be a little in line with the rest of the world.

Examples of what has been said is I have been comparing prices in the 2010 version compared to the 2008 one. For Walking Liberty half dollars a random comparison is only 20 changed in the entire series. This is for just random graded coins. In the 2010 edition for Proofs, I checked 49 issues and found 26 went down in price, 7 went up, 16 were not changed at all. For Flying Eagle Cents/Indian Head Cents out of 58 checked, 22 had no change in prices and 36 went up slightly. One last test was for the Standing Liberty quarters. Out of 28 checked, only 15 changed at all. 11 up slightly and 4 went down in prices. In other words for prices you should probably purchase one every 4 or 5 years.

So, in answer to your question: Yes, buy one every year.
The only accurate way to track trends over time.
