Would love to understand what environmental factors cause this coloring.

Thanks for looking.

Certainly the result of exposure to an environmental agent. Copper is a reactive metal so it's not always easy to identify what precisely caused any staining/discoloration/toning. May have spent a little time in a moist, outdoor environment--then recovered and washed-up a bit long ago. Anyone's guess.

Nice die chip in the 9 (1957).

No offense taken coinfrg. I know one thing it is worth one cent. And unless you have one, it is one you don't have, and I do. Also, it appeals to me.

Thankfully I don't need the $$$ and can appreciate diversity for what it is.

Well, bare minimum it's worth its weight in copper...about 2 cents if I'm not mistaken.

If I do not mistake, till it is Legal Tender, you can not sell the cooper penny for metal, except to whom the Treasury Department allow. In this case you has to send in Canada, and the shipping will made your 2 cants value minus 5 cents.

Coin was wet, damp, humidity and probably never holdered . Copper cents have always been plagued by bad environments .

Environmental tarnishing/staining/gunk. How caused, no one knows until you created it. It's face value is about it. Damage is damage, in this case, post mint. Keep what you'd buy.
