My most recent FEC cherry-pick. Been after one of these to add to my registry set although not sure if this one will end up in a slab or not.

This is one of the three mule clashes for 1857 flying eagle cents-some of the best and most interesting varieties out there. This reverse die was clashed with a 25C Seated quarter. One of the most interesting things about this variety is that the Seated quarter variety exists with the corresponding clash marks from a FEC, so some collectors venture to complete the set of the two.

Of the three clashes that exist, this is the second rarest just below the Snow-7. The snow-9 is far easier to locate than both the Snow-7 and Snow-8. It has taken me some years to cherrypick this variety, and the snow-7 is going to be a much bigger challenge. Even attributed these rarely come up for sale (if anyone has a S-7 that they are willing to part with, please PM me!).

I'd put this at just enough detail for a F-12, although my hesitancy to slab this comes from the old scratches on the obverse. I'm afraid it may detail for "scratches" or "graffiti". IMO, it's an attractive coin and I think it has a decent shot at straight grading.

Thank you for taking a look!

Nice pick! The scratches are light, not deep and may be market acceptable. I've located 2 in the many years I have looked for them, and one of them was horribly damaged. It's a tough coin with a very interesting story behind it.

Now you need to cherry-pick the quarter clashed with the FEC!

Appreciate the input Raider. Always happy to see you chime in.

I've been looking at FEC's for years trying to find some of the biggies like this clash; just recently decided to go for a full set. Nice that you've found two, even if one is badly damaged. Certainly a super scarce variety, in fact I believe this may be the first example ever posted on CCF.

Trust me, my eyes are out for that quarter .
