Hello guys,

I'm about to buy new 'piece of eight' from a shipwreck. The seller has 2 coins, both 8 Reales, one is from Capitana shipwreck 1654 and the other is from Maravillas shipwreck 1656. I wanted to ask which one of those shipwreck coins is more valuable/rare?

Regards,
Sac42

I don't know much about shipwreck coins. I assume the more valuable coin would be the one that's the best condition, or if few coins were salvaged from one ship, but a lot of coins salvaged from the other ship, scarcity may add some value.

Doesn't matter which wreck, if there isn't some sort of official COA to go with it, to prove provenance.
For that bit of paper, you may have to pay considerably more.

Before even considering to buy such a coin,
learn as much as you can about seawater corrosion, despite if the associated wreck is identified not.

I remember a similar topic on this forum, where a person (also from Bulgaria, it seems) wanted to buy a shipwreck coin for himself. Hey, it was you!

I would recommend you to stay at NGC. So you would be sure of authenticity and that this coin is really from a shipwreck.
Could you please provide photos ?

They both have COA from legit shipwreck sellers, one of them was sold on Sedwick auction.

I have seen NGC slab a coin as an authentic shipwreck coin despite the fact it did not have a COA or any other way to prove provenance.
