Whilst I was browsing coinstagram I came accross this in a PCGS holder. I've never seen anything other than coins, tokens or medals being slabbed. I personally think this is silly. Anyone seen these before?

Ive seen these a few times, quite interesting. I believe they also slabbed a handful of nuggets recovered from the same shipwreck.

Yes, a variety of items from the shipwreck were encapsulated by PCGS. It helped with sales/promotion of the items - folks like to "know" they are getting genuine items.

The PCGS web site has lots of info about the ship and recovered gold. Check it out here:

I've seen slabbed gold dust like this, as well as large PCGS slabs with both a gold coin and a small amount of gold dust encapsulated. One dealer I frequent has in his inventory a PCGS slab with 1.5g of gold dust from the "Sacramento Assayer Hoard". Interesting stuff, but not something I'd want to own myself. To each his own...

Looks like PCGS will slab anything.

I've had a PCGS slab with SS Central America gold dust since around 2002.

I appreciate this as a means to tie the provenance to the gold in an handy slab. I'd assume it holds a premium to spot gold flakes, which is all the salvagers/distributors needed to hear from PCGS to go through with it...

I had to look to see if it was actually graded.
