This quarter is so worn out but I absolutely love it, had it for 30+ years. It is my favorite quarter and it makes me laugh. I am curious how those circles got there on his head and was wondering if anybody ever ran across something like this.

Welcome. Looks like someone did the obverse circles with a letters/numbers punch or similar. It could have been pressed like in a vise. Lots of things happen to coins in circulation. When I was a kid I put a penny on railroad tracks, the train flattened it good :) Although I think it's illegal to deface, alter a coin. Your quarter is not mint error, worth 25 cents IMO.

to the CCF!

The coin looks like it's been flattened against something (another coin?) that transferred some details.

Do you happen to know the diameter of your quarter?

It's damage of some sort - but fun to look at.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to welcome me to your forum. I know you are all very busy. It is pretty extraordinary to get tips from experts on my journey.

BTW, I am not concerned about the monetary value of my funny quarter, but I appreciate your comments very much. I just like it. The quarter and I have a funny "relationship" ha ha. I will never give it up.

Cameras are funny things and I am still waiting on a new one, but I saw how people take pics of their measurements so that is what I did for practice. The quarter is 25mm. I was not concentrating on getting details of the coin, but WAM! The lighting and setup brought out so much detail on the obverse and it was completely unexpected!

It looks to me like a melting process; almost like that big glob at the bottom around 5:30 above the 88 was once part of the bottom O up on the head!

Yokozuna makes a good point that it could have been another lettered metal object was on it and it melted off, so the blob at 5:30 above 88 is sort of like candle wax dripping down.

Thanks jacrispies and livingwater, you have some good points too. I am learning about gas bubbles and also how people mess with coins on purpose. I have a LMC that might be a BB coin but that is when I learned about the Rockwell test.

I love all of your ideas! I am going to nickname it "Squid Quarter" so Thanks Coinfrog!
