I am searching halves and have read in the Red Book that some 1971D and 1977D are silver. Are these coins 40% or not?

Yes, they would be 40% silver clad. However, by some, it means that about 10 or less are known so an incredibly rare off metal error.

yes, 1971 is clad, no silver... unless maybe a mint error, but I have not heard this for 1971 kennedys.
