Found this 1986 D Lincoln Penny what appears to have an rpm did some research and there are 1985 and 1987 rpms but no 1986 here are some pics, the rpm is located to the east of the mint mark

Honestly looks like split platting I may be wrong because the pictures are grainy when I try to zoom in. But I have seen many zinc cents with splitting around the D. and if it was to the east I would expect to see some signs of a vertical bar inside the mint mark or at least a thicker vertical bar on the primary mint mark. again just my opinion let others chime in.

Afraid this is just some split plating and the beginning of zinc rot setting in. Not an RPM.

Your coin is not an RPM and there are a bunch of known RPMs for 1986-D: http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php

Agree, just a plating issue.

Emergent split plating mixed with a dose of Pareidolia.

When looking at that area, the surface looks irregular. If it were a RPM, it would be raised as high as the mintmark. (they are punched into the dies with a hammer an punch)

Keep in mind that the dies are already hardened, so adding the mintmark with the punch take a strong blow. If has to be below the fields and show up as raised on the coins struck with that die.

CoopHome: Why are mintmarks above the fields on coins? punched incuse mintmark into the die below the fields, will make it rise above the fields on the coins
