S-230. R-1. this is probably the best date for finding a choice draped bust in high grade at a reasonable price.
that price is AU money. I think details wise this coin gets there. I dont love the color. the nick on the cheek and the pits in the obverse field are also detracting. I think that you could find a better piece in a similar price range. it may take a some time. this coin is nice, and one that most people would be very proud to own.

 The damage is distracting, but a nice coin regardless. I think it is AU but not sure if it made a details designation. Suffering from bust half fever. I agree with Frog, it looks AU but the photos are too dark to tell for sure.

photos are little dark but I have it at AU55. not sure how PCGS will see the porosity on the right field and bust and the pretty good hit on the cheek. I might call this one AU details. if thats the case then AU details and not worth the $2100. tough call if you want to put out that kind of $$ even if the slab has it straight
i agree for that price you should be able to find a better example

Thanks for your input so far, CCF! I know my awful photos make this one tough. Again, I have a side hustle as a photographer, and one would think that photographing metal discs through plastic would come more naturally to me--I'm still not very good at it. I found that this coin sold in auction in 2017. They have better photos! Here are they are:   |

i was mistaken about the roughness in the obverse field. that is a die defect. it left the mint with that feature.
i still dont love the coin.

@CarrsCoins: Thanks so much. My original photos were terrible. So the strange texture on the obverse field is not pitting then? I know the gash on Liberty's cheek distracts, but is the coin corroded? I have so much to learn about early copper!

I do not think the surfaces show any corrosion, and the roughness in the right obverse field is a feature of S-230, as CarrsCoins mentions. In my opinion, however, the color is too dark and not appealing and the surfaces show too many marks. For that price, and especially for an S-230 which is a Rarity 1 - in other words, it is a relatively abundant variety, I would rather seek appealing, brown surfaces, even if the preservation is not that high. Here is a S-241 from my collection. It is also an R-1, but shows the color which I would prefer.  Edited by GERMANICVS

new photos much better. I would agree that what I thought was some corrosion on the planchet looks like its die related.
technically I think it grades AU55 but I'm revising my grade to AU53 looking at the overall coin and taking that hit into consideration
I'm kind of at odds that the coin graded straight with that deep hit right in the sweet spot. at a straight 55 grade the coin would be in the 4k range at AU53 the $2100 would be pretty much retail
PCGS shows the following
AU50 - 1
AU53 - 1
AU55 - 1

this is die state VIII. those pits are from the die rusting. they will be bumped up on the surface of the coin rather than being incuse. this variety is a great example of how the mint kept limping dies along forever. eventually the area between the reverse die crack and the wreath falls out of the coin creating a large internal Cud. after that happens the entire chunk with (S)TATES starts to fall out as well eventually loosing all of TES my s-230 is a rather ugly vg in an early die state. this coin is quite a bit nicer than the one I own. |

I like the outstanding hair detail which might compensate somewhat for the busy surfaces and face hits. The 53 grade may reflect a bit of net-grading.
The dark color won't appeal to everyone but this is a pretty great type coin. Congratulations!
