I found these shiny LMCs in pocket change collected over 40 years. The collection started in the 80s so that might be why I found lots of nice shiny ones.

Other threads showed similar pics and called their examples "Greasers" or struck thru grease. Is that what these are? It is always in the same spot up at the States area on the reverse, but not sure why that is. Also, on some of them the EPU is not affected which I don't understand so I thought maybe it is something else.

I wanted to show a couple of them here to make sure I am designating them properly as Greaser cents before I continue because maybe I am wrong.

Are Greasers common? Are they collectible?

Thanks for checking these out and letting me know your thoughts!

They are not uncommon. These exhibit only minor grease effects and probably wouldn't be considered typical collector items.

Thanks! Is that why EPU is not affected, because they are minor grease effects and just didn't spread further down?

I keep trying to open the Greaser link and can't get it to load.

Generally, any strike weakness in this area on the reverse of an LMC is due to insufficient metal flow rather than grease in the die.

That spot is directly opposite the highest point on the obverse devices and the slightest variation in planchet thickness or strike pressure will cause not enough metal to flow into the dies, resulting in a flat looking strike.

Look at the bottom of the bust on the obverse of the 1987 and you see slight flattening of the details running across the middle of the coin that corresponds to the slight flattening on the reverse.

It's a very common issue with the LMC as noted by how frequently you've found them in pocket change.

Here is how you can tell the differences:

Note the devices near the rim.
