Howdy, I'm helping my dad clean out my parents' place since they're getting ready to
sell. I stumbled on this coin along with some old pennies from the 30's and or so.
Anyway, there was this older looking thing that I'm having trouble identifying, the date
on it is 1849.

I was able to find an example of a fake on ebay, but it had the letter "R" on it (for
replica). The one we have has a "T" on it. Does anyone know what that stands for?

Also, I read that this could be a (replica) of a sample press coin used as a test before
pressing the coins in gold. Also, the coin reads, "Cincinnati Mining & Tracing Company"
rather than "Trading Company" which I read means that it probably isn't authentic.
Anyway, my dad said he's probably had it since the 1960's or 70's...so it's at least that
old.

Does anyone know any more history beyond this or can they help figure out what that "T"
might stand for?

Thanks!

I am going to say not real. You can likely weight it though. It should weigh 33.4 grams for it to be worth $20 in 1849 and it would need to be gold.
I just don't think that is gold based on the pictures. I can't find a $20 1849 Cali gold example that looks like that either in the Red Book.

In my OP I mention that it isn't gold...I don't think gold would age that way, anyway.

I'm hoping someone on here knows more about where it may have come from or the meaning of that "T" on the heads-side. It differs from the
pictures of fakes that I have found online, which is why I'm curious.
