I'm finally getting around to taking photos of all the major coins in my collection (not a small project). While doing the Maple Leaf coins, I discovered this error. At first, I thought it was a dent, but on closer inspection, it appears to be a raised mound between the A and N with some deformation through the C and nearly to the rim. I've owned and seen lots of these over the years and never noticed any defect like this. Has anyone heard of errors in the maple series?
It probably came from one of the following, a over polished die, over tooled die, or a cracked die. Depends on who is looking at the coin as to whether it brings a premium or not. I personally like Die crack coins because it makes them unique, others don't.... also... this thread is USELESS WITHOUT PICTURES!
It looks like a plating bubble, :D ,( was this gold maple dated 2009 when there was the major inventory discrepancy at the mint, maybe this is how they reconciled the problem.:D )
