however OP is stating they dont have the coin. if its possible to go back and retake it, it would help. I can see what IGE is seeing and I wouldnt buy this unless I was sure. it could be strike or different die OP try this if you go back. 1. remove coin from holder if possible 2. turn off flash 3. place coin on flat surface with indirect natural light. maybe a window sill in a cloudy day 4. move phone about 3in from coin 5. zoom in using your fingers until the coin comes into focus 6. hold phone steady. if you cant then place something on either side of the coin at that distance and lay phone on top. this will hold it steady and allow you to zoom and take the photo without any blurring

Roma2021, the best way to tell a fake is to compare photos of coins that have been graded by NGC and PCGS. Then start comparing the different parts of the design. Can you post larger photos of those you have opened this thread with?

Compare the lettering on this coin with your photos. This is another 1886-S in an NGC holder.

Here's a third NGC coin close up on lower lettering.

@IGE, thank you for being patient with me. I am seeing some softness in the details on the coin I handled; especially the 'E' in 'Five'. I do not see anything that jumps out as being strikingly or alarmingly different. As a new collector that has not handled this coin before I would (mistakenly) assume this softness is from wear or moderate circulation.

It's not a coin I would buy if offered to me. I just see too many things about it I don't like.

Thank you both. I am going to spend some time on this one, but if I hadn't posted here I would have bought this one. To my untrained eye, I am not seeing enough red flags, but I'm glad I ran it by all of you. It's diameter, thickness, and weight are all on and the shop is reputable. It makes me feel like an absolute amateur that I cannot spot what seems to be glarring to others. Thanks again everyone. Edit - I am starting to see it; although I have to home in on the details on my phone and laptop and look for the exact areas of potential weakeness, ie bubbly, soft lettering, overall weakness in strike, etc. https://coinweek.com/counterfeits/c...-half-eagle/https://www.ngccoin.com/news/articl...t-Detection/
