I am wholly unfamiliar with this coin. Any thoughts and opinions on grade would be appreciated. It's currently at a local shop for about $450-460. I may sell a worn sovereign at a slight loss to buy it. Thank you! Edited by Roma2021 09/07/2022 12:17 pm

Photos aren't very sharp, I'm closer to MS60 but it could drop down to AU. That price is more in keeping with an AU grade for this coin.

Good price at this time. I think it is low mint state, MS-62.

Thank you. I thought AU. Gold shops here tend to price at gold weight + X with little regard for numismatics.

After a closer look at this coin I do believe it is a counterfeit. Check the beads on Liberty's hair and some of the hair curls. They do not match this genuine PCGS coin.

Unsure of authenticity. Otherwise, I'll say MS-61, possibly 62, not a fan.

@indiangoldeagle... I haven't bought the coin yet. What in particular in the beads are you seeing that's causing concern?

@jim... Tell me what's indicating fake?

If counterfeit it's not a blatant one. I would suspect an ex-jewelry piece given the very baggy obverse and what looks like damage along the right obverse rim, possibly from mounting in a bezel.
The 1886-S is a common date and should be priced close to bullion value in this condition. I would think a nicer example could be found for around the same price.

Compare the bead sizes in the hair. Compare the hair curl shapes and sizes. I believe this is a Lebanese counterfeit made in the 1970s-1980's time period. They were very close to the originals but small design features were off. Much better quality than what comes from China now but still fake. They were used strictly for gold sales back then.

Also compare the shapes of the reverse lettering. Larger photos of the OP coin would help show this.

This is interesting. I am not going to buy the coin, but I am still having some difficulty distinguishing it as a counterfeit. I trust it is, but I am looking for telltale signs that it is fake. The hair beads and curves look to my amateurish eye like a weak strike. If anyone is interested, I am open to learning as much as possible so please keep this thread going . . .
