I purchase lots of jewelry in auctions, and I came across this ring with a coin in it. I will get it removed by a jeweler to ultimately melt the gold, but I was hoping to identify what the coin is. I know it is hard to see, but hopefully this image will be enough. Thank you and take care.

Seems to be a common Late Roman bronze coin. Perhaps Constans - Like this - https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces175775.html
I would keep it in the ring and sell it as is.

A 4th century Roman bronze coin, possibly showing Constantine II (could also be someone else). More than so is hard to tell, I think, without any of the surrounding inscription. The coin looks like it has been cut to fit into the ring, which makes it worthless.

But to CCF!

I guess I need to figure out if the ring is as old as the coin. It is 18k, so probably not. The stamp looks odd and not recent, so I am not really sure I guess. I hope the coin is not cut, and if the ring has no value as a ring since I paid gold melt value for the lot, I will probably have the coin removed carefully, if possible, just to find out if it has been cut. Wow, so many great replies. This forum seems really good and very nice people the first time here, so thank you so much for the help.

I would think the coin has been cut as there's no room for legends.

It almost certainly will not be an ancient ring; an ancient bronze coin stuck in a ring would have turned all green and crusty all around the gold It simply wouldn't have cleaned up this nice.

There is an industry, in the middle east (Iraq in particular, I believe), of taking genuine but cheap and common ancient coins, filing them down until they're nice and round, and inserting them into jewellery items like this, and selling such pieces to tourists.

I have an ancient Iraqi coin that someone has treated in this way. The coin is... less than desirable now, because of the filing done to it.
