Dear all,

'Found' this silver coin. It was dirty and sold to me for little as a 'bronze' coin.
I thought otherwise. Turned out to be silver, as you can see.

Trying to read the coin, I find bits like 'IOC' and 'III', which let me to believe this a coin from Antioch, perhaps from Bohemund III. But: I can find no similar coin googling around with this info.

Tried other things, but to no avail.

Is there an expert in da house?

Best,
NONOLET

@non, first welcome to CCF. Second, to me this looks like a medieval Denier, perhaps French. In the first pic, I think I can see _ACC_ REX and the rev looks like BA__ NO. I can't put my fingers on it though in a quick numista and acsearch investigation.

to CCF!

You have a dinero from Barcelona by Jaime I of Aragon, 13th century. Inscriptions read IACOB REX and BARQINO (for Barcelona).

Another one, with a bit of info here: https://www.catawiki.com/en/l/20283...alanas-cobre

Hi all, thanks for welcoming me into your august company

>>and thanks for thinking along.

The weight (sorry about that) is o,72 grams, diameter 18 mm.

@erafjel : Cheers! Both images do not match with the Catawiki one, but the text matches indeed! Now I found this more direct match here, on Numisbids: https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=l...647&lot=2006 (a Corona it would then seem)

So: solved. Not a huge treasure but definitely more than a small piece of 'bronze' :-)
And a nice proof of how well (and fast) this community functions

Have a nice day, thanks again!

Yes, the shield has three pallets/bars in my link and two in your link (and on your coin), if that is what you mean? It seems both variants exist, here is one with two and here is another one with three. I think both variants are the "same" coin (from different emissions, obviously) and that the number of pallets in the coat of arms of Barcelona (as it was) was not significant, it was the striped pattern as such that was important. (The palleted shield is still present as part of the Spanish coat of arms.)

Also, the coin in your link is an obolo (˝ dinero), the coin you have is definitely a dinero. "Corona de Aragón," or Crown of Aragon, was the name used for the monarchy that ruled a number of territories in and around present day Spain.

A nice coin, with an interesting piece of history associated with it.
