Can anyone tell me what the difference is in the two varieties for the small motto? In reading and googling, looking at pics. What am I missing?

There's only one small motto variety that I know of, which is FS-401. Where did you get this pricelist from?

There is only a single variety in the Small Motto, it's just how the slabbing service is labeling the coin holder.

ANACS is really bad at this so was ICG in the early days, so many coins are listed as multiple things yet are the same, others are listed by a suggestion only like Clashed or die crack, without any actual variety number ID assigned like Fivaz/Stanton or Overton, Sheldon, etc. Just add the Small Motto census numbers together as they are all the same, pricing differences are likely only due to differences in the holder age not the coin itself or just a complete toss up by the grading company. They (all the TPGs I know) acknowledge there is only a single business strike Small Motto variety. The ultra rare Small Motto proof does show doubling on the motto and was not put into service to make business strikes.

It's from the PCGS price list page: https://www.PCGS.com/prices/detail/.../most-active

Just click open the expand cross on the 3579 coin to see both PCGS numbers and the strange pricing differences. It's been like this for years on this coin.
