1953 5 Cents Thank you for your help, I am a newbie to this website and coin collecting. Can anyone tell me if thry think this is a 1953 Nickel-Near-No Shoulder Fold? What I really need help with is why this coin weighs only 4.24g? I hope the pictures help. I will try to get better pictures.
The 1953 nickels are a different weight than one let's say, 1955, because they used chrome plated steel to mint nickels from 1951-1954. This is also true with 1944-1945. They used nickel for another purpose.
The chrome-plated steel nickel should weigh 4,54 g. Photos show maybe some metal has been lost (corrosion?), especially near the rims. Don't know if that would account for the missing 0.30 g.
Thank you for confirming the near shoulder fold. It's the weight that confues me, I'm using a digital scale and I get the proper amounts for other coins.
