I've decided to try putting a set of Seated half dimes in F12 to Xf45 condition. Any advice would be appreciated with regard to dealer sources of coins, known "common" counterfeits to look out for, recommended references, unappreciated rareities, tips on grading, etc. I'm basically starting from scratch and have a lot to learn. Thanks in advanced. ElmerFlick

@elm, this sounds like a fun idea. Are you planning to get one from each date, or include all mints as well?

Yes Spence, going for the "complete" set by date and mint and will likely go after the more noteable varieties listed in Redbook/Greysheet. I like collecting oddball sets like 3 cent silvers and nickels, Shield nickels, etc. and Seated half dimes are the only seated set that I think I have a reasonable chance to finish without going bankrupt. Larry Briggs, Brian Greer and Gerry Fortin always have a lot. I ran into a bunch of them at a local coin shop completely by chance, and bought several semi keys. My 1846 was also random luck, in a Florida shop. Not a thing of great beauty, but it fills the hole. It taught me to always be looking for what you're not looking for.

There wasn't many contemporary coin collectors when these were issued into circulation. That means it will only be possible to complete a set in lower grades.
Should be a very interesting goal to attempt to achieve, anyway.

Even though I am not a Half Dime specialist collector, I find your beginning journey both informative and entertaining. Feel free to post your progress, what coins you find, and what interesting facts you learn! Great finds at the local coin shop! Both Half Dimes have great originality. What do you plan to house your collection in?

Luckily I had the foresight to buy the Dansco album several years ago for $30. I just never got around to actually collecting the coins until I decided to yesterday.
