Hello.
I found a brand new 2022 D dime that is shiny on the obverse and dull on the reverse. I've never seen anything like it. I'm very much a newbie here.
Thoughts?

Nice find!

It may just be me, but the Denver coins minted in the past several years seem to have a bit more "gloss" than the Philly ones.

Environmental toning. Sometimes happens to one side only depending on what chemicals/events/methods the coin comes into contact with whatever toned it.

I would concur with JBuck that the Denver facility has consistently struck better quality business coinage since the middle 2000's. I'd also agree with Earle42, the center console of a vehicle has a way of dulling copper/nickel quite rapidly. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing!

that Denver has consistently produced better coins that other mints. and if that coin had sat for a long time reverse up it could have tarnished more than the obverse.

The alloy used for nickels and the outer clad layers on dimes, quarters, and halves are susceptible to environmental damage also resulting in a darker appearance. Unless you are getting them from mint bags or rolls it would be hard to know exactly what its been exposed to during its circulation. They can also develop toning. Here are some of the things I've read that can cause a coin to tone dark or can cause a coin to turn a variety of colors, from deep grey or black to mottled or speckled.

Experimentation with acid, or just normal corrosion
Burial in the ground
Being tossed in a water fountain
Exposure to intense heat, or very cold temperatures
Storage in a paper envelope, PVC plastic, or open-air case
Contact with caustic chemicals or fumes, such as sulfur or gas
Sitting in a warm and humid environment for long periods of time
Placed in old fashioned coin folders or albums can also cause toning, potentially attractive, with colors ranging from light blues and pinks even to rainbow colors.

Thank you all for your responses.
I must stress that this is a *brand new* dime. There's no way it sat on a console in a car or was pulled from mud/dirt. I own a restaurant and this dime came from our tip jar, which is 99% of the time just change that is given to a customer. They simply drop it into the jar. If it originated in my cash register, it probably came in a roll from the bank.
I will hold onto it and do some more investigating.
Thanks again!
