Hello guys. I was going through some of my Canadian 5 cents, these ones came out of a very old album and all have this weird blue toning. I freaked out when I saw this. It looks XF-AU but with toning hiding a lot of the details. Sigma tested silver, weighs true. Need your opinion.

I'd give it an acetone bath.

Looks good to me. It should be sent to a 3rd party grader (PCGS, ICCS, NGC) for authentication. An acetone bath and water rinse then dab dry (DO NOT RUB) should remove the gunk. Or when you send it for authentication you could have them conserve it. Good luck.

Great find! In this case, I would recommend using a TPG conservation service along with authentication/grading.

Maybe it IS one of the approximately 100 known.
If this the case, then this one is probably 'known' as well, and should have some sort of provenance, which is well worth following up.

If no provenance, it needs to be authenticated.
Short cut for doing this is to submit to a TPGrader.
They will not grade it, if, in their opinion, it is not genuine.
Then consider a break out and conservation, and re submit.
Otherwise, professional conservation may? be a waste of money

Looks horrible as is.

I think that this coin is genuine.
I also think it is well worth the pain of re slabbing and conservation.

I suggest you send it to a coin grading service to have it graded and verify its authenticity. If it's real, it's very valuable.
