Found this 1982 D mint quarter and was wondering if this was an error or if something just hit the quarter? If it is an error what would be the typical worth of the coin? There are two divots in the head of the coin and on the opposite side it bulges through and is affected.

Diviots on one side and coresponding bumps on the other indicate that the coin was hit hard and deformed the coin. so, Damage is what I see here.

Looks like the coin was burned and then polished off the black area on the coin. As already mentioned, Post Strike Damage and just a spender.
