I was wondering what price a 2006 MS 70 First Strikes Gold Buffalo, certified by PCGS would go for. I see some outrageous prices on ebay, but I was wondering what any of you would feel happy spending.

Percentage wise, the fractionals command a higher value. IF the Buffalos resume being minted, the fractionals may not be. I wish I had bought some tenths when I had a chance, this was before I knew production would be suspended. Even at that time the fractionals were too much above spot for my taste. But now, well they are at about 300-400% above spot. I think this is because the limited number of fractionals were more affordable and quickly got snapped up. The $50(1oz) won't command 400% even at PCGS MS70... the MS70 might get you double spot or so. But, being what ebay is, who knows. Check completed listings as opposed to outrageously priced Buy It Nows that are re-listed again and again &... Raw mint sealed pieces can still be had at a few hundred above spot... even in Canada. Btw, I'm never happy spending anything. VVV I agree with what he said, about the nice bullion thing VVV

$1,200 is as high as I would go for an '06 MS70 Buffalo. A lot of people will pay more but it's really not a numismatic coin. Just very nice bullion.

I still say, espicially with these, that the term "First Strikes" are just a sales ploy that supposedly warrants more money value. The first so many on the press are determined by "quality" and that's it. There's not too many "low quality" Buffalos minted, either Uncirculated or Proof. And so, for myself, I would pay NOTHING more for a supposed "First Strik" Buffalo.....or any other coin for that matter. Were I to participate in the "buy, sell, trade" arena....that label wouldn't warrant more value for me. Quote: $1,200 is as high as I would go for an '06 MS70 Buffalo But I would certainly NEVER sell one of my two '06 Proof Buffalo's for only $1,200.00. I think I paid $895.00 apeice for them from the Mint. Also got an '06 Gold Eagle.....same story. I never purchased them to sell for "turnaround money" anyway....really just for nice additions to my collection.....as was the gold Jamestown and Dolley Madison Proofs. And I'm happy with that. I do wish I'd have purchased some gold fractionals too though......but I just got to the point "back then" that I was done buying gold. IF the gold market ever collapsed or something.....then maybe I'd get some more......but....

I wouldn't buy First Strikes either. As Eaglefoot mentioned it is just a ploy that is irrelivent to the coin itself. Buy the coin- not the slab.

Also there can only be ONE true "first strike". Does anyone know how many first strikes constitue a first strike coin according to the mint? Just curious.

Quote: Does anyone know how many first strikes constitute a first strike coin according to the mint? The US Mint does not and never has used the terms "First Strike" or "Early Release", they are just made-up marketing terms. The TPGs that created the terms generally have a guideline of giving them to coins purchased within the first 30 days of release, as shown by getting them to the TPG within 30 days or having an unopened shipping box from the US Mint with the shipping date on the label. The terms have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the coin as a FS or ER could still be a late die state coin.

Thanks for sharing that info biokemist. So the amount of first strikes probably vary greatly according to the 30 day limit. Interesting to know.

That's the key piece of information ........you buy a "First Strike" or an "Early Release" that is "slabbed" as such, but it turns out to be a "late die state" process coin......and my "unslabbed" proof coin is worth more than yours because of it's better quality.....which is of "eye determination" not a "bought within 30 days" determination! And so you DO NOT have a coin that was one of the first few minted on new dies AT ALL ! It could be VERY late in the process of minting and of MUCH LESSER QUALITY. And you can still have "First Strike" coins LATE IN THE YEAR AFTER THOUSANDS OR MILLIONS HAVE BEEN MINTED !Judged by a reputable source as " MS 70 OR PR" is one thing......but adding the term " First Strike" or " Early Release" is something else entirely ! And I won't pay for that "terminology" ........ If the Mint itself does NOT designate which coins are "First Strike"....then how could ANYONE know, apart from being individually judged "superior quality"...... answer : "THEY COULDN'T" !......

My Fractional Proof Set is "Last Strike" and proud of it! And I wouldn't trade them for two U.H.R.'s .....

You should send the set off and ask for a " Last Strike" label.....that would confuse more than one person !

I do really like the design of the PCGS "First Strike" label for the American Buffalo gold coins, so if they can make a "Last Strike" label with the bison facing away from you walking into the sunset, sign me up! My ship box is dated (Friday) Nov. 21, 2008, and if I recall correctly the set was listed on the Mint Catalog website as 'Not Available' on (Monday) November 24th.

I knew if I searched for this topic, it would'nt be long before I found it. I was going to ask the same original question. I'm not a big collector, actually don't even own any american coins (yet), but I love those gold buffalo's, and almost have my wife convinced to let me buy one. I'm not sure if I can buy one in Canada? So I may have to search on ebay. I guess the big question is to wait for the price of gold to slide down? or "BUY IT NOW"?

I believe that gold will hit around $1200 around the middle of this year and then possibly relax into the 800s.
If the mint has them again, you can always order it from them and have them shipped to Canada.
