I'm a tyro when it comes to coin collecting and investing. In purchasing coins, which grading companies are the most reliable and which should be avoided? Which companies provide the most accurate grading of coins?

Thanks and God bless,

IMO PCGS would be my first choice for accuracy,my second choice is NGC,then ANACS,avoid the rest for the most part.

My comments are primarily directed toward collecting, rather than investing. Successfully investing in coins has challenges that I'm not qualified to address.

At most grading points, and NGC and a PCGS graded coin will command similar prices. However, once you get to MS69 and MS70, the PCGS graded coin will bring a bigger premium. This doesn't mean don't purchase an NGC MS69 or MS70 coin. Just be aware that a coin graded MS69 by PCGS might be good enough to be an MS70 at NGC.

ANACS becomes the third option. ANACS will grade a problem coin (such as damaged, or cleaned), and will note the problem on the coin. They will give a grade to the coin, such as "VF35 Details". All things being equal, an problem free coin in an ANACS tends to go for a little less than the top two TGP's.

PCGS has started to slab problem coins, but they don't give it a grade. They merely label the coin as being "Genuine".

ICG is also a safe bet for purchasing graded coins.

In all cases, you are buying the coin and not the slab, so you have to make your own judgment on the coin. If you go outside these top 4, you've got to be extra careful to know the coin is authentic if it is a valuable coin.

But then there is potential problem of coins in counterfeit slabs.

My Friday afternoon 2 cents on the matter. As always, I appreciate the feedback of others on anything I've said they feel might be in error.
