Hello All,
I have a beat up 1944 cent that looks like it could either be a DDO-003, DDO-007, DDO-017 or maybe I am just seeing circulation flattening. I am leaning toward a DDO because of the different appearance of the 4's in the date. Note that the "triangles" of each "4" are of different size. For the 17! different DDO listed on VarietyVista, the three likely candidates:

http://varietyvista.com/01a%20LC%20...4PDDO007.htm

Like to hear other opinions...

Thanks,

Looks more like circulation flattening. (Note all areas are affected the same on your coin)

@Coop,
I do not doubt your assessment of circulation flattening. However, what is the explanation for the 4's looking different? The flattening/broadening looks even for everything else.

Same issue. Flattening in circulation. On a DDO on the 1944, the devices are enlarged on them:

Note the distortion on the DDO on the 44 compared with a normal 1944 cent? Look at the centers of the devices, not on the outside/inside edges of the devices.
Even on doubled dies, Machine Doubling can still happen:

Note the reduction of the devices? Machine Doubling strikes again on this coin. (But still a doubled die with Machine Doubling) Circulation alteration and Machine Doubling never creates a doubled die.

CoopHome: What creates a doubled die coin? a doubled die creates a doubled die coin. Machine Doubling never creates a doubled die
