I purchased this 1909-S IHC from jerryc39 late last month. I waited a while to break her open. Sure, I had some hesitation, but the real cause for delay was that I was not sure the exact method I would use. I also wanted to document the procedure with a couple of photos.

I decided to try the delicate approach, as opposed to something quicker using a power tool. I wrapped the slab with some paper towels to capture any shrapnel. I did this at the kitchen counter over another towel and paper towel. My tool of choice was using a C-clamp to apply pressure...

I torqued the clamp until I heard a cracking sound. I removed the clamp, unwrapped the slab, inspected, re-wrapped, move clamp to a new location or orientation. Rinse and repeat as the kids used to say.

Eventually there was enough breakage to open up the slab. In case you were wondering how many cycles it took, the answer is six.

In this case, she opened up like a book.

And here we have my raw 1909-S IHC ready for my Dansco album. The photos look much better now that the slab glare and "prong shadows" have been eliminated.

Excellent! This is my first breakout. Might not be the last. I have five "key" holes remaining in various Dansco albums...

Thanks for sharing the step-by-step process. I think many folks wouldn't be so patient!

I'm still a confirmed "slab lover". It makes it so much easier on my wife when it comes to converting it to cash. Of course that won't happen until I'm no longer functioning.

Hmm, that "Clamp Method" seems easier than cracking slabs with a metal cutter.

Well done indeed jbuck. Here is my 10 year old topic on an alternate method - if you have the proper woodworking tools. http://goccf.com/t/96248edit for spllgening

Always nice to see a coin freed from being entombed! Hope you are gonna save the label though.

Haven't been a hole-filler for 30 years. so I wouldn't crack for that reason. But if you need to "save the label", you're not really liberated.
