The surfaces look like they are struck through oil or a thin layer of grease filled with debris from the minting process. (i.e. metal shavings, dirt)
I have this coins sister/brother (Have we ever talked about calling
like coins sisters or brothers?) that's also a die clash strike. The surfaces caught my eye and then I discovered the clash marks while examining the strike through.
I always loved the eyes under the Monticello on clashed Type 4
Jefferson nickels. It makes them look sort of sinister and makes me think of the old Dracula movies with the double exposure of his eyes over the storm clouds.
