Thickness Of Morgan Silver Dollars - Coin Community Forum

recollector Valued Member Canada 191 Posts	Posted 10/01/2022 03:37 am getting out the calipers, I realize my Morgan dollar (1886) is thicker than it should be, like 2.9mm instead of 2.4. graded XF. I bought from a reputable dealer. size and weight check out. I realize that the rim is slightly raised. so the calipers measure the thickness of the rim because the jaws are wide and extend over the rim, not just the body of the coin. question: is the 2.4mm standard for the rim or the body of the coin? If size and weight check out, and the rim thickness is 2.9mm, it follows that the metal must be less dense at 8.1 gms/cc Report this Post to the Staff
