Hello everyone.

Looking for some help in determining current market value of a Canadian Five Cent piece 1948 graded by ICCS in SP-66.it seems that these specimen coins have gone up in value over the past few years and the online resources that I have checked are listing prices on the low side.

Thank you to anyone who can provide some guidance.

Well, guides are a general opinion at best. You need someone with money to buy it. You can't go by guides or Trends/papers. You need auction or ebay sales.

ebay MS (not SP) 66 sold for $478 cdn
coinsandcanada shows the same (MS66) @ $970 and SP66 @ $466 cdn
numista (has had a lot of newly added user entered values) only shows UNC

best bet, look up sold values at HA.com

I usually go by the average SOLD prices on ebay, this tells you what people are paying for a coin.
The average for the last three sales on ebay for a 1948 SP-66 nickel is $455.95.

There have been no sales on ebay of 1948 SP66's in 2021 or 2022. Also, the prices you guys are quoting are from coinsandcanada so we dont know who graded them. For example if they were graded by NGC then they would be priced considerably lower than a coin graded by ICCS.

The last PCGS graded 1948 SP66 nickel sold at HA shows as shows as $264US in 2019. It's a little hard to predict exactly what that should be in Canadian funds in 2022, but honestly the $450-480 suggested by others in here is probably not too far out of line. Might be a little lower. Might be a little higher. Never know until you try to sell. PCGS has 37 of them graded in total and 13 are 66 with 7 graded higher. It's not a particularly rare year. Now if you had a 1938 or 1945 I know a guy who would love to talk to you! ICCS and PCGS grading for specimens of that era is similar, (especially if it's an older ICCS flip) if not exactly the same, so the PCGS info is relevant as far as it goes. You could post nice crisp pictures of both sides of it in here if you wanted an opinion on grade.

From what I see, high grade MS coins sell for more than SP graded coins. They're harder to find than an SP coin that someone put in a drawer or box as soon as they got it.

Thank you for all the replies and info.

It's not a coin that I own, it's currently listed on ebay as a 1948 SP-66 5 Cents.

The guide prices currently listed seem a bit too low, however, the listing price of approximately $1,000 Canadian seems on the high side.

Anyone care to have a look at the listing and share thought whether it makes the grade and guesstimates of value I'd be much appreciative.

If you don't feel comfortable buying the coin then don't buy it. Another one might come along at some point but to know that no others have been sold on ebay for over 2 years leads me to think you might have to wait awhile for another one to show up. Pre 1967 specimens are in demand and I see them all going for 2-4+ times book value....even common ones like 1937's. For example, try finding a 1937 SP penny at the moment. None of the big dealers have listed any on their websites for 3+ years and ebay is the same. And yet Coinsandcanada lists a SP66 for $268. I'd gladly pay 2x that amount.
