Stereo optical microscope with infinite zoom. I feed the coins under the scope on an ash stick fluted to fit cents. I have two such sticks so I can flip the coins all at once. I can generally make it through a 50 coin roll in less than three minutes.

I started out using a 10x doublet and now I use a 14x doublet and it works well for me.I have tried a 30x and it was way worse then the 10x,i got rid of it in about a week of using it,i also use a 150 watt lamp,if you can stick with a 100 watt,my eyes are not so good any more that's why I use a 150 watt lamp and a 14x loupe.

Just your basic 10x loupe. I basically look for wheats, copper cents, and then just a few varieties (Wide or Close America on 1992, 1998, 1999, 2000), doubled die (1972, 1983, 1984). I am not a cent collector necessarily, and moreso a copper cent hoarder...lol. So I dont look at these that closely.

I've posted these photos here before, but here is the setup I use in going through groups of coins. It's a stereo-optical infinite zoom microscope with dual fiber optic lighting and a home made set of 'sticks' with a 3/4 inch groove routed into the top so coins don't slide off that fit a half roll of Lincoln cents at a time. I have two of the sticks so I can put them all face-up, look through them, slap two boards together and flip the whole thing over to look through the reverses.

With the setup I showed above it's easy to separate groups of dates in mixed rolls to look for different types of reverses. Also, if all the coins are laid out on the stick so that the obverses are perfectly right side up, when the whole stick is flipped over, rotated reverses show up like a sore thumb.

I can usually make it through about ten rolls an hour like this. If I spend the entire day (from 7AM through the evening) I can get through an entire $50 bag of cents in a day, but it's tiring.

Well, I CAN...I don't usually. Typically if I can get through $20 before being blind as a bat and bored to tears I'm doing good.

Chuck, this might be a good place to mention your die variety class you are helping to teach at the ANA Summer Seminar this summer. I assume you will be demonstrating all of this plus so much more and it is easier to learn when you are in a room with the instructors instead of over the Internet.
