I've been interested in a reeded edge half for some time now and I spotted this one on ebay. It is in my price range and condition range but it is priced higher than the PCGS retail value. PCGS lists it's value at $160 but the seller is asking $195. What do you think is a fair offer for this coin? https://www.ebay.com/itm/354314558651

No matter the value assigned by a publication or pricing guide a coin will always stand on it's eye appeal when push comes to shove. This coin has eye appeal!
Remember too that the Seller has fees to pay and other business expenses.
I do not see the price he is asking to be out of line. The Seller considers "best offers", too. Maybe you should try that approach(?).
Good luck!

Thank you for the link John! Numismedia has the value for a VF-20 at $132 but I am assuming that is for a raw coin?

Thank you all for your advice. I hate paying more than the trends for any coin but after seeing the amount of problem and details graded coins on ebay, I thought that making an offer between his asking price and PCGS value would be fair to both of us. I offered $170 and the seller accepted. So I won't lose any sleep over paying $10 above retail for a straight graded coin with pleasant eye appeal.

Congrats! I have no problem paying more than what any pricing guide says for a coin if it has eye appeal and there aren't any others on the market that are similar and cheaper. Price guides definitely don't take eye appeal into account, nor could they.

I think you did very well on this coin as it has huge eye appeal. It's unfortunate that so many of the reeded edge bust halves on the market, especially on ebay, have been messed with, whizzed, cleaned, polished or are just plain butt ugly. It's nice to see a refreshing coin with huge eye appeal find a good home! Congrats!

Congratulations! You got a great coin, and in my opinion, based on the eye appeal of THAT coin, the $170 you paid was an excellent value!
My late wife passed away six years ago at age 64 suddenly with no medical warning. That put many things in life into a different perspective for me, including the pleasure I derive from numismatics. In the past, I thought exactly like you did when you posted your question. I would not "overpay" for a coin, figuring another one would come along soon.
After my wife of 46 years passed away, I saw things differently. If a coin came along with real nice eye appeal that I really wanted for my collection, I wouldn't allow a "premium" of 10% or 20% to keep me from getting that coin. In your example I would have done just as you did - make a reasonable and fair offer. Even if this listing didn't offer the option of "Make an Offer", I would have messaged the seller (or do "detective work" to figure out how to contact the seller directly) to make a fair offer. But if that offer was rejected, in the case of this coin, I would have then agreed to pay the $195. I would then have had a problem-free eye appealing coin that I really wanted.
Comments by others above are correct - the PCGS Price Guide is only a guide, and probably represents retail prices of "average" coins for the grade. Coins with above average eye appeal for the grade are truly worth more. In my opinion, smart collectors recognize that, and they will regularly pay more than the retail guide for superior coins for their collection!
Happy Hunting!
Steve
