ok on this 1971 D cent this is the start of a clash right there is like 2 or 3 little mounds right above the date running north and south then right behind the back of his head there are really faint ones running north and south from the bottom of his neck up along the back of his head to about the middle of his ear I guess about the middle of his head is where I think they stop and I'm pretty sure that there is a line running east and west from the bottom of his ear to the back of his neck but I'm not sure it looks like it could be damage so what do you guys say did I get it right saying its the start of a clash or if not what do you guys say it could be

well, it would not be he start of a clash, but rather evidence the dies wore down after a clash some time ago

I do not see this. Just overlap the coin and you will understand me. I do not exit this hypothesis, but for the moment nothing convince me. The clash is clash and always has others marks for. IMHO this it is not a clash, I could be wrong as well. let see others what chime in.

An over-lay - meaning that an image of the obverse and reverse showing at the same time to show where things line up.

Very cool find! Here is a link to a 1971 D clash but is different than yours. You can see the bay, just above the 1 in the listing, that lines up with yours.

Looks like the clash was so minor, they didn't polish it off that die. Depending on how the two dies make contact, the clash event can be different.

I'm not so sure on this one. The overlay doesn't line up.

Here's a Clash Overlay. The anomaly on your coin would seem to be a clash from the second bay of the monument. If it's not a clash mark it could be a Die Dent from improper handling of the die.

Edit: I can also see a very faint line in the field just to the East of Lincoln's eye, and to a lesser amount behind his head. This would be the clash mark from the bottom of the Lincoln Memorial.

With these marks along with the mark caused by the second bay and maybe the first, I see this as a slightly rotated clash die strike.
