It's not often that I dive off the deep end But when I do I like the water cold !
I save the hot water for when the wife finds out !!!!
AE As Emperor Hadrian Laureate bust right of emperor Hadrian Obv. IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG
Rv. PONT MAX TR POT COS Britannia seated on rocks facing slightly left Arm resting on shield S C in fields BRITANNIA in exergue
As fate would have it I was felled by an "arterial venous malformation" which very nearly killed me and in fact took my fathers life 35 years ago ! Having pulled through and survived brain surgery I now need to make room to accommodate this emerald The lowly As has always been my favorite ! When emerald green ? Well it don't get any better than that !!!!
7.45 grams (bit of a light of weight) Given the patina though I can't help but wonder if it might be 'orichalcum' instead of copper 25mm
Won't be home to photograph it until Sunday so I use seller pics with a modicum of enhancement
Glad to see you have pulled through. This Forum is a better place when you're posting! This coin is a beauty, but what I like most is the front facing Britannia and clear detailing.
A budget buster without equal for me But perhaps I have had a few premonitions over the summer months While I had some hesitation about the expense the color green and the fine detail of BRITTANIA overcame my reluctance and I threw my caution to the wind
While I recall a few depictions of BRITTANIA this appears to be the prototype for the much more familiar image from the reverse of the British copper penny I could be wrong !
But it pleases me
Now to justify it by coughing up the lucre !!!! But the best things in life don't come easy !
That is a real beauty, FVRIVS, and as Spence mentioned: the imperfections only add to the coins perfection. This Hadrian has traveled a long way through time to find it's way into your appreciative hands. Cherish your role in the story! *smile* I too have a daughter, like your own, who has a heart for such marvels. I hope you are doing well!
For sometime now I have contemplated the inevitable 'downsizing' of the permanent collection I justified this acquisition by assuring myself that through simple attrition I could manage to pay for it Time now to start sorting the wheat from the chaff !
FVRIVS, you are so right. I have two daughters who could not be more different from each other. It is reassuring to know that I have someone who is interested in carrying on the stewardship of the coins in my possession. As for the possible "downsizing" of your collection: I feel for you, brother. I have done that exact thing more than once. Yet I have always managed to hold onto a handful of precious specimens. I hope you can too.
Yes Several times in my life I have divided the 'collection' into halves One one side the keepers On the other side those which I felt less attached It was an easy and useful way to upgrade and help fund any expansionism
But now I have decided my fondness for medium sized bronzes forms a good basis for retrenchment My rather large assortment of billon tetrarchy folles I will include with the keepers (especially London Trier & Lugdunum !)
My daughter assures me she will hold them dear for a minimum of 50 years That's the best guarantee for me
Ahhh, your daughter's assurances are like gold. Her heart is good! *smile* My collection is a mere twenty-one specimens. Down from a decade ago when it numbered a little over a hundred. At one point I was holding onto six precious pieces that I could not part with. Two years ago I decided to focus on the larger variety of ancients. Mainly because such coins offered the best in terms of portraiture. Being an artist myself, I chose to appreciate the art of the ancient portrait. A rather narrow focus, I admit...but it suits me.
