After much searching...and saving...I was finally able to acquire a coin from another of Rome's formidable opponents: Carthage. This trishekel was struck sometime during the Second Punic War, 210-202 BCE. I am fascinated by the Phoenician roots of Carthage and the fact that Sicily plays a central role in the violent (and virulent) conflicts between two of history's great powers. Very excited to be the steward of such a marvelous piece of history! The obverse depicts the wreathed head of Tannit, the patron mother-goddess of Carthage. Worshipped as both a goddess of war and fertility. The reverse: a horse with palm tree behind. A bit of corrosion is obscuring a Punic T and S that would ordinarily appear below the horse. Very nice dark brown patina! 30.23mm, 20.31 grams. Report this Post to the Staff

What a super and well defined portrait of Tannit, and of course I do like the image of the horse on the reverse. The coin is in really nice condition for such a large bronze. I see myself merely as a caretaker. A steward of a historical artifact that came into being thousands of years before my own existence, and (hopefully) will continue on for thousands more after I am gone. It is a humbling thought! Thanks, Jim and Earle. Six months ago I saw a similar trishekel and was mesmerized. So I set aside a little bit of money each week in the hope that I could acquire one. I saw many trishekels while I was saving up, and all were either too pricey or overly worn. This one has all the nice details and fell within reach price-wise. Sometimes things simply work out!
