I am selling my family's collection of Morgan dollars. Of the 200 or so lots I have culled out 21 that have cuts, dents, or are worn badly. These just don't look nice compared to all the others which have very few problems. These coins have seen their day, and I want to just dispose of them. I assume I use a coin dealer and sell them as scrap silver. I live near St Louis. I contacted a scrap place in NY state, the price looked good, but Fed Ex won't take the coins for transport. Anybody have any ideas ? What should I expect ? email removed for member's protection--Coin Community Staff

Welcome to the forums Even worn, some dates bring a premium. Do you have a list of the dates you're talking about, or even better, some pictures of them?

to CCF, Is there a coin shop near you? I am sure they will buy scrap silver at about 10 or 11 times face value, also even though the ones your selling as scrap are all worn out or damaged in some way are any of them a rare date or VAM? if so they might still have a premium. John1

to the Community! You might want to consider taking them to a local coin show. Although you probably wont get more for them than what the scrap dealer offered, it will at least save you the hassle of shipping them. If you want to maximize their potential, auction them off on ebay as "junk silver" or fillers. Many people like to buy these coins for their silver content. The advantage of leaving them in coin form is that they are easy to determine their silver value, given that they are of a known purity. Another option would be to hang around here until you qualify, and then offer them for sale. At the very least, you would save on the ebay and PayPal fees!

Welcome to Coin Community. I'll be blunt - your current course of action will likely only net you about 10-20% of what these coins are actually worth. The percentage of their true value you will realize is directly proportional to the amount of work you want to invest in correctly identifying them for grade and variety. A given Morgan dollar could be worth anywhere from $20-$50,000 depending on condition, variety and rarity. Even a "badly worn" 1893-S, for instance, is worth well in excess of $1000. So, I beg you: Stop. Learn. A good start would be to post a list of the dates and mintmarks in the group - we can isolate the ones which warrant real scrutiny. Does your current level of knowledge allow you to identify the ones which are Uncirculated, or close to it? If not, we will be happy to help.

Here are 4 examples of what thought was scrap.Three are badly worn and on the fourth, half of the word Pluribis is nearly gone. In the second photo you see what I think the collection should look like. I think it may be nearly uncirculated.
The pics are not here. I pressed the Insert Image icon, and the only thing that happened was ing. showed up on the screen, and I could not do much with it
Help !

As SuperDave noted they could be worth almost anything. Not only are the dates important but the condition is very important. I suggest you take some time and learn just what you have.

Correction. The decent coin image needs to be resized, so only 4 of the bad ones are here. Two on the left badly worn, lower right has letters worn off, upper right has a nasty dent Don, I corrected your post for it to show properly. You were 99% of the way there. You can edit this post to see what I changed. Bottom line, you inserted everything fine, removed all of the extras, but the img tags need to surround the link, not be at the end only.

I put pictures of what I though was basic scrap yesterday. Tonight I hter front and back of what I think is a good collectable. There is a slight nick near to rim on the top. There is also a blemish on the cheek. I can barely get it in a photo. What condition do you think this represents ? The cost to have coins professionally graded seems expensive for the prices you get, because I don't see the graded coins on ebay going very well. Thanks All Don, I tried to make this photo work, but I wasn't successful. Can you post the actual link/file again like you did on the last photo? Look at the link you provided with the first photo I corrected and you will see what you are missing with this one.

Don you might want to try Scotsman Coin. They are on Olive Blvd. It don't hurt just to talk to them.
