That I seriously doubt. No one will aspire to be the "least expensive" top tier grading service. Prices will keep rising.
Right now, CAC has the enviable reputation of being a reliable filter for PCGS and NGC coins, no small stature. But if they intend to compete directly with these behemoths, then how can they possibly maintain neutrality? You either grade or rate the graders - don't see how you can do both.
I agree. No, apparently they state at the end of the article that "We will be phasing out the stickers over time."
Creation of the CAC Grading Service is not expected to diminish the value of coins already graded by other grading services and bearing the CAC stickers, he said. "These coins are welcome in our registry set as they are.
I don't see how this works - will they be saying that ALL of their graded coins will be of an equal standard to their old CAC stickers - that is, reliably better than comparable PCGS and NGG coins in the same grade? If so it will clearly bring a higher fee, which of course people are already paying for the CAC upgrade. So - cut out the middlemen (PCGS and NGC) and go straight to the source?
Ill wait for more info. A good question @coinfrog, The CAC green sticker also adds to the value and demand. Certified coins of the same grade can be of varying quality. Many of today's collectors want coins that are solid or premium quality for their assigned grade and CAC will verify previously graded coins to be a solid/high quality example for that grade. There are many coins that are certified accurately for their grade. Unfortunately, it is an inescapable reality that many are at the lower end of the quality range for the assigned grade. CAC's rejection of a coin does not necessarily mean that CAC believes the coin has been over-graded. It simply means that there are other coins with CAC stickers that are of higher quality for the grade. CAC will eventually reject tens of thousands of accurately graded coins.
So that seemed different than the general grade which may just be lowered to the next lower grade perhaps without stickers being used in future and considering it over graded.
Quote: I wonder if ebay will recognize them as an acceptable grader, otherwise they won't be able to sell on their website.
ebay won't allow them as graders unless they have a free-access, online database open to all. That was the problem with SEGS and PCI (and several other TPGs) -- no online DB.
I DO know that if CAC: -- does create their database, and -- ebay allows CAC-graded coins to be listed in the same manner as PCGS, NGC, ANACS (and ICG?), and -- if CAC-graded coins get CAC stickers, then their grading would be totally bogus.
They should offer to re-holder the coins they've stickered in the past for free, or maybe for a small fee, with the 'Correct' grade as they see it in their slab. Then they would have some of the best coins in numismatics in CAC slabs very quickly.
I find the CAC sticker idea interesting, but I've never had a coin with enough value to use the service.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!
A few thoughts: 1. I hope it helps with the apparent grading backlog 2. Will CAC stickered coins be collected like old rattler holders? 3. I hope they do not ever get in the modern or world coin game. I like that they focus on older US coins. 4. I welcome the competition 5. Not that I get many coins graded, I wish I had signed up for CAC
This is a complete change of business model for them, which is really interesting. I am curious how their grading will work. Are they going to only try to have top end coins in each grade (very conservative grading)? I.E. If PCGS/NGC call a coin MS-64, but that coin wouldn't have received green bean from CAC, do they grade it a MS-63?
This change will definitely leave open an opportunity for another company to take over where CAC is leaving off with stickering coins.
