The only Elagabalus coin I have is very worn, and this one with the Δ Ε reverse caught my eye so I placed a bid on it. It is better and more detailed in hand than the images show. There are some excellent histories of Elagabalus already posted in the forum, so I'll stay with the reverse.

Not being familiar with this reverse I did a search and found Barbara Lichocka's in depth paper "Delta-epsilon issues of Elagabalus and Severus Alexander". A few few of the relevant (to me) extracts are below.

Elagabalus, Antioch - Seleukis & Pieria. 218 - 222 AD.
Obverse: Laureate head right. Obverse Inscription: IMP C M AVR ANTONINVS AVG. Reverse: Large Δ Ε, star below, all within laurel wreath. Bronze. Diameter: 21 mm. Weight: 5 gr.
Reference: BMC 447 - 450.

Note: BMC 450 does not have the small rosette at the top of the wreath.

Very nice coin, Jim. I too have long coveted an Elagabalus. Aside from the prices, my new focus on the quality of the portrait has only added to the difficulty of acquiring one. I was keeping track of a beautiful specimen (maybe a year ago), but the cost put it out of reach and I had to watch it go to another steward. *sigh* I will keep at it. Someday!

Thanks, Mike.

They do say that everything comes to those who wait. Hopefully another Elagabalus will come your way that fits the bill, and the budget too.

Thanks, Paul.

Barbara Lichoka's paper runs to forty-eight pages with illustrations, and covers virtually everything there is to know about these coins.

An image of the reverse of the coin under LED lighting shows the rosette and other devices much clearer, though there is a rather strange green cast.
